We need more family videos.

We all know how fcked up this year has been, but I think the some of the good that came from it were:

  1. People learned to be cleaner. Like they should have always been, but you know.

  2. In bad times we realized how much family means and that we should make the most of the moments we have.

I’ve always been a sentimental creature and after having an all night drinking sesh with my dad while watching home videos on VHS — lucky we still have a VCR kicking’ around — it made me realize that we don’t capture moments like we used to.

Sure, we take pics and vids with our iPhones, but then what happens? Likely lost later on or if lucky, stored on a hard drive somewhere. It got me thinking about the whole concept of family photography and home videos.

Some families pay a photographer to come shoot annual portraits, but I don’t hear of any doing annual family videos. I mean, it should be more than annual, but you get the idea.

I thought it would be fun to do a family photoshoot and cinematic video session. Likely something I’ll be offering soon, but I wanted to see if the content would turn out as I envisioned.

And did it?

It soooooooooooo did!

I wanted the family shoot to be in the home, relaxed and just a simple hang out. I didn’t want it to be overly staged or forced looking. I really wanted it to be like how home videos used to be which was really about nothing but happenings around the home. Moments that might even seem like nothing now, but carry so much weight when we look back at them in 20 years.

We see how young we were. How innocent our children used to be. The home we lived in at that time and the fashion that was in play. The rush of memories and feels that come back as we revisit that moment just for a while. It’s the same concept we try to bring to our wedding videos.

We all know nothing lasts, but that’s why it’s all the more enjoyable.

And these photos and videos can live on a USB stick that become your mini time machines that you can plug in and travel back to a happy moment of your choice. A butterfly effect without the repercussions.

Massive thanks to Steph! We’ve known each other since university and I’m glad we reconnected now. You’ve crushed cancer, run two business (Simple Goods), made a couple of amazing little ones and I’m so happy to see life going well for you! Evan, I love you too, bro! :)

Thanks again for the hang out and letting me capture our first mini time machine together.

Much love,
Tuan
